S382

RACF SVC processing: exit returned a non-valid return codeSYSTEM ABEND

A user exit attached to a RACF service call (SVC) handed back a return code the system could not accept, so the work ended with abend 382.

MOST LIKELY

An exit for the RACF service call returned a value the service does not accept.

FIRST CHECK

Find the IRR401I or ICH409I message issued with the abend and note the reason code and calling module.

What it means

IBM's RACF diagnosis guide gives one description for abends 382, 383 and 385: a user exit that belongs to the RACF service call (SVC) passed back a return code that is not valid.

The abend normally comes with message IRR401I or ICH409I, which gives the reason and names the calling module. That message is the place to start.

Typical causes

  • An exit for the RACF service call returned a value the service does not accept.
  • The calling module belongs to an IBM product, another vendor's product or your installation; finding its owner is the first step.
  • The message issued with the abend (IRR401I or ICH409I) holds the details.

How to fix it

  1. Find the IRR401I or ICH409I message issued with the abend and note the reason code and calling module.
  2. Work out who owns the module: names starting with ICH or IRR are RACF, others usually belong to another IBM or vendor product.
  3. Ask your systems programmer to search IBM support for a matching problem.
  4. If nothing matches, the systems programmer can collect a dump and open a case with IBM.
