FILENOTFOUND

DFHRESP(FILENOTFOUND) = 12CICS RESP CONDITION

The file name in the command is not defined to this CICS region.

MOST LIKELY

A new program version uses a file name that has not been installed in this region yet.

FIRST CHECK

Check the name the program actually passes, including trailing spaces, against the definition.

What it means

RESP 12 (RESP2 1 on a READ) means CICS has no file resource with the name given in the FILE option. It is about the CICS definition, not about the VSAM data set itself.

If the program does not test RESP for it, CICS ends the task abnormally.

Typical causes

  • A new program version uses a file name that has not been installed in this region yet.
  • The file name in the program is misspelt, or a working-storage field holding it has the wrong value or padding.
  • The program runs in a region (test, another environment) whose CSD does not have that file.
  • The file definition was discarded from the region.

How to fix it

  1. Check the name the program actually passes, including trailing spaces, against the definition.
  2. Use CEMT I FILE(name) in the region to see whether the file exists there.
  3. If it is missing, get the file definition added and installed in this region (usually by the CICS systems team).
  4. Test RESP after file commands so users see a clear message instead of an abend.
