What it means
A 713 abend means something went wrong while OPEN was processing a data set that lives on tape or on a disk-type (direct access) device. The abend on its own is only a headline.
The real detail is in message IEC148I in the job log. It names the task that ended and gives a return code in register 15. Always read that message before changing anything.
Typical causes
- An error found by the OPEN routine for a tape data set.
- An error found by the OPEN routine for a disk (direct access) data set.
- The exact trigger is given by the return code in message IEC148I, not by the abend code.
How to fix it
- Find message IEC148I in the job log and note its return code.
- Follow the response given for that return code in the IEC148I description.
- Read the other job log messages around the failure for extra clues.
- If the program is correct and the error repeats, ask your system programmer to search for a known fix.
- If there is no fix, give IBM Support the JCL and the program listing.
