SB37

Out of space (end of volume)SYSTEM ABEND

An output data set needed more space and the system could not give it any more on the volume.

MOST LIKELY

The output grew beyond what the SPACE allocation allowed.

FIRST CHECK

Read IEC030I to find the DD, data set and volume.

What it means

Abend B37 is issued when the end-of-volume routine finds an error while extending an output data set. It comes with message IEC030I, which names the job, step, DD and data set and gives the return code.

In practice it means the data set filled the space it was allowed and could not get more, for example because the output is larger than the space allocated for it.

Typical causes

  • The output grew beyond what the SPACE allocation allowed.
  • A secondary quantity too small, so the data set ran out of extents.
  • The volume or storage group is full.
  • A program loop or duplicated input wrote far more records than usual.

How to fix it

  1. Read IEC030I to find the DD, data set and volume.
  2. Compare this run's record count with normal runs to spot a loop.
  3. Increase the primary and secondary SPACE quantities.
  4. Ask the storage team if the volume or storage group is full.
  5. Delete the partial output, then rerun the step.
