Out of space on all volumesSYSTEM ABEND

An output data set ran out of space on every volume it could use, or a PDS hit its space or extent limit.

MOST LIKELY

A PDS full of dead space from replaced members.

FIRST CHECK

Read IEC032I for the return code, DD and data set.

What it means

Abend E37 comes with message IEC032I during an output operation on disk or tape. The return code explains why.

Return code 04 means the data set ran out of space on all its volumes, or a PDS or VIO data set filled its single volume (a PDS can also hit this at 16 extents). Return code 08 means a multi-volume sequential data set could not get space on the next volume. Return code 0C means an installation exit rejected the extend.

Typical causes

  • A PDS full of dead space from replaced members.
  • A data set restricted to one volume that filled up.
  • Too few volumes allowed for a multi-volume data set.
  • The next volume had no free space or no room in its VTOC.
  • A site exit refused to extend the data set.

How to fix it

  1. Read IEC032I for the return code, DD and data set.
  2. For a PDS, compress it, reallocate it larger, or switch to a PDSE.
  3. For return code 08, allow more volumes or ask the storage team about free space.
  4. Increase SPACE so the data set needs fewer extents.
  5. Delete partial output and rerun.
