What it means
Abend 813 comes with message IEC149I, which gives a return code, the DD name, the device, the volume and the data set. It is raised while opening a tape data set.
Return code 04 means the header label on the mounted tape does not match the data set that was requested. IBM has documented it for a data set that was not the first file on the tape and was not catalogued, so the volume and file position came from elsewhere, and for a DFSMSrmm open rule that tells it to ignore the volume on input (message EDG4061I comes first).
Typical causes
- The DSN in the JCL is not the name in the tape's header label.
- The wrong volume serial, so a different tape is mounted.
- The wrong file sequence number in LABEL=, for a data set that is not the first file on the tape.
- An uncatalogued tape data set referred to with wrong volume or file sequence information.
- A DFSMSrmm OPENRULE with INPUT(IGNORE) or ANYUSE(IGNORE) for the volume.
How to fix it
- Read the IEC149I return code, DD name and volume serial.
- List the tape's labels and compare the data set name and file sequence with the JCL.
- Correct DSN, VOL=SER or the LABEL= sequence number; or catalogue the data set and refer to it by name.
- If a tape management product issued a message just before IEC149I, ask the storage team to check its open rules.
- Rerun once the mounted tape is confirmed as the right one.
