What it means

The CANCEL command ends a job step or TSO user abnormally with code 122 or 222. Code 222 is used when no dump is requested; 122 is the variant used when the cancel asks for a dump.

The program itself may be fine. The job was stopped from outside, often because it seemed to loop, hang or hold resources.

Typical causes

  • An operator or automation cancelled a job that looked looping or stuck.
  • A user cancelled their own job and asked for a dump to investigate.
  • The job was holding resources other work needed.

How to fix it

  1. Find out who cancelled the job and why, from the system log or operations.
  2. Use the dump to see where the program was when it was stopped.
  3. If it was looping, fix the loop; if it was waiting, find what it waited for.
  4. Rerun after checking whether partial updates need restoring.
