MQRC_FORMAT_ERROR (X'083E')MQ REASON CODE

MQGET asked MQ to convert the message, but the message format did not allow it. The data came back unconverted.

MOST LIKELY

The sender set the format to MQFMT_NONE (blank), so MQ does not know the data is text.

FIRST CHECK

Check the Format field the sender sets; for plain text use MQFMT_STRING.

What it means

The program asked for data conversion on MQGET, but the queue manager could not convert because of the message's format. The message is still returned, unconverted, and the CodedCharSetId and Encoding fields tell you what you actually got. The completion code is a warning.

Typical causes

  • The sender set the format to MQFMT_NONE (blank), so MQ does not know the data is text.
  • The format names a user conversion exit that cannot be found.
  • The message data does not match its format, for example a broken header.

How to fix it

  1. Check the Format field the sender sets; for plain text use MQFMT_STRING.
  2. If a custom format is used, check the conversion exit of that name is installed where the queue manager can load it.
  3. Check that the data matches what the format or exit expects.
  4. Handle the warning: read CodedCharSetId and Encoding before using the data.
