S80A

Not enough virtual storage (R-form GETMAIN/FREEMAIN)SYSTEM ABEND

A storage request through an R-form GETMAIN or FREEMAIN could not be met because the area ran out of virtual storage.

MOST LIKELY

The REGION for the job or step is too small for the program's needs.

FIRST CHECK

Read the reason code; 10 means the job's own private area ran out.

What it means

Abend 80A is an out-of-storage condition during an R-form GETMAIN or FREEMAIN. The reason code shows which area was short.

Reason codes: 04 means not enough SQA; 08 means not enough CSA; 0C means not enough LSQA; 10 means not enough private area storage, which is the usual case for application jobs. Abend 878 reports the same kind of shortage for other request forms.

Typical causes

  • The REGION for the job or step is too small for the program's needs.
  • A program obtains storage repeatedly without freeing it.
  • Very large tables or buffers allocated at run time.
  • A site limit on region size (set by an installation exit) lower than REGION asks for.

How to fix it

  1. Read the reason code; 10 means the job's own private area ran out.
  2. Increase REGION on the JOB or EXEC statement if the storage is really needed.
  3. If storage keeps growing, look for a storage leak in the program.
  4. Ask the system programmer about site region limits if a larger REGION does not help.
  5. Get a dump if the cause is not clear.
